Common Gut Health Complaints & What you can do about them
COMMON COMPLAINT 1: CONSTIPATION
Make sure you’re getting enough fibre! Aim for at least 30g per day. Try to eat plenty of Fruits and Vegetables with skin on, wholegrains, nuts, seeds & pulses. Drinking enough water is also essential and you should aim to drink 1.5-2 litres of water every day.
COMMON COMPLAINT 2: DIARRHOEA
Reduce your stress levels! Whenever we’re stressed we can send signals to the gut, diarrhoea can be a cause of high stress. There are many ways we can reduce our stress levels- try some yoga, a simple meditation, breathwork, journaling etc. Find the method that words best for you.
COMMON COMPLAINT 3: BLOATING
Try to not have fruit with protein as it can ferment in the gut and cause bloating. Fruit on an empty stomach is best. Start a food diary and see if you can correlate a pattern between the foods you are eating and when you are suffering with bloating. Avoid grazing and aim for 4 hours between snacks and meals.
COMMON COMPLAINT 4: REFLUX
A food diary for reflux is again really helpful. See which food group seems to be your trigger. Top tip- chew your food properly! You could also try taking a digestive enzyme that can break down more difficult foods such as fats and lactose. It may also be necessary to rule out low thyroid output. Stress can again be another trigger so incorporate that stress management.
If you try these things and your symptoms are exasperated or not improving, I would recommend seeing a gut health expert to rule out any underlying concerns.
